Biography and Introduction

I started writing at an early age. This work you will never see. It carried me far, and got me into college (Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine). The manuscript that accompanied my application was an alternate history novel which you will also never see.

While a college student I began to write a science fiction trilogy, which was part talent, part imagination, part vanity and part ambition. You may see this someday; but there was an idea there that eventually led to the creation of another series, which I began writing around 1985, and began being published by Tor Books in 2001. Thus, it took a mere sixteen years for me to become an overnight success. These four books, The Dark WingThe Dark PathThe Dark Ascent and The Dark Crusade, have received favorable comparison to Hornblower, to David Weber, and to Orson Scott Card. One reviewer likened their ‘quest structure’ to J. R. R. Tolkien. They are presently to be found in the Baen ebooks Library. The first book is free.

In 2005 I visited Scotland and Rosslyn Chapel; as a result I wrote the Templar novel A Song In Stone, now available from Fantastic Books in print and Prologue Books in e-book form.

In 2014, my Victorian mesmerism novel Elements of Mind was published by Spencer Hill Press.

In 2015, my first novel in Eric Flint’s highly popular Ring of Fire universe, 1636: The Cardinal Virtues, was published, in collaboration with the estimable Mr. Flint. I expect to do more in that milieu.

I am married with one daughter, and live in Massachusetts, where I work as the librarian for the Grand Lodge of Masons in Massachusetts, in which body I serve as the Grand Historian. I have been a Freemason for nearly three decades, and a baseball fan for longer than that.
