It has taken me some time to get around to setting up my web site once again.
walterhunt.com has been on the net for quite a number of years, at least since before it was cool to have an author web site, but a number of things have gotten in the way of keeping it up to date, viz.:
- Illness a few years ago, which basically brought a halt to most everything;
- Writing (which takes up a lot of my time, as you’d expect);
As a result, the web presence – printed on my business card, bearing my name jammed together with the ubiquitous .com – fell into disuse. And when my ISP updated some software it became completely inaccessible. Thus . . . something new.
Why have a web presence, given that we now have Facebook and other social media? Why indeed. There are people who work very hard to provide good content at that URL with their name on it; writing excerpts, biting social commentary, urbane wit, political rants. This all takes time, and energy, and devotion. It’s easier to slap something on one’s Facebook wall than to write a blog post, and most things thus slapped fade rapidly into obscurity, as they should. I never blogged about things that enraged me, nor was I interested in laying down markers to last for the ages. I tried to recount travels, and for a while I would summarize recent Facebook posts. It all took time, etc., blah blah, time better spent writing.
This new site is an attempt to end that. I intend to provide material on my writing, both past and current, as well as information on future projects; links to books I’ve read or am reading; and other material that I think should have a lifespan greater than a Facebook post. I promise to provide an update at least once a week, and will link to it from Facebook.
Hopefully you will find interesting things to read, and good links to follow.
